The Himachal Pradesh Pollution Control Board (HPCB) has implemented stringent measures to address industrial pollution in the Baddi-Barotiwala and Nalagarh region, the state’s largest industrial belt. The board has introduced additional parameters for heavy metal assessment, initiated regular checks of air quality, and directed the disconnection of power supply to 41 non-compliant industrial units.
To enhance the scientific handling of hazardous waste generated in the area, a multi-crore Common Effluent Treatment Plant is set to become operational in September 2014. The introduction of these measures aims to significantly reduce pollution levels in the region by the end of the year.
Praveen Gupta, Senior Environmental Engineer (Baddi), emphasized the board’s commitment to cracking down on industrial pollution to preserve the overall water and air quality in the state. He stated that all industries in the area will be legally obligated to transport hazardous waste to the designated facility at Dabhota (Nalagarh), where it will undergo treatment and stabilization.
Responding to concerns raised by environmental groups, including Him Parivesh and Himdhara, Gupta assured that the HPCB is closely monitoring and taking strict action against violators. The board conducts regular checks on ambient air and water quality, with four operational Ambient Air Monitoring Stations in the area. Gupta noted that the average value of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) remains within prescribed limits. Additionally, the board has introduced extra parameters for assessing heavy metals.
Over the past six months, the HPCB has issued 71 showcause notices and disconnected electricity to 41 industries found in violation of environmental regulations. Gupta clarified that the responsibility for addressing illegal mining lies with the mining department, although the pollution control board actively monitors water quality at 31 locations.
